A Faces of Courage Devotional
Where does courage come from?
Olivia in Faces of Courage says she never had courage because it wasn’t part of her DNA. Of course, we know that isn’t where bravery comes from.
We know from Scripture that courage is rooted in faith and comes from believing in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and we are saved by grace through faith as a gift of God.
Through the Holy Spirit, Christ lives in our hearts also through faith, and He will strengthen us with power in our inner being.
So, whatever he calls us to do or go through, He gives us the power in our inner being for it, that is, he gives us courage.
We stand firm and remain grounded and steadfast in the faith, like Abraham who did not waver because he was fully convinced that what God had promised, he was also able to do.
But what if we feel we lack faith?
In Luke, we read about many lessons Jesus taught the disciples. I think they must have felt overwhelmed, because in Luke 17:5, they ask the Lord to “increase our faith.” They wanted more faith. Perhaps they felt greater faith would give them the courage they needed to achieve the high standards Christ set for them.
The Lord’s answer? “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed,” the Lord said, “you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.”
So, on the one hand, like the disciples, we can ask Jesus for more faith, but really, we only need faith the size of a mustard seed, which is very tiny.
And, standing firm in our faith produces obedience,
If we live by faith in the Son of God, when we are obedient to the Word of God, we can have a confident courage in being part of God’s plans for us, because He loves us and gave himself for us. No matter our circumstances.
Do you have faith the size of a mustard seed? Allow that tiny seed to develop into the courage you need and step out with grit.
Scripture
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed,” the Lord said, “you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you. (Luke 17: 5-6 CSB)
Prayer
Lord, please give me a faith the size of a mustard seed and help me grow it into the courage to obey your Word and trust you no matter the trials you allow in my life.
