I’m firmly entrenched in the middle-class, and all I know about the wealthy like “Sully” Sullivan in A Heart for News is what I have seen in movies and read in books. With one exception.
I’m related by marriage to the man who developed The Valley Plaza, Bob Symonds (my uncle’s father), in 1942 (opened in 1951). The Valley being The San Fernando Valley near Hollywood, California. He also helped to create the Miracle Mile concentration of shops on Wilshire Boulevard. The Valley Plaza was the first mall west of the Mississippi. Presidential hopefuls John F. Kennedy and Mitt Romney made campaign stops at the plaza.
Unfortunately, these days, it’s mostly abandoned, boarded up, or about-to-close stores.
