Food! Food! Food!
Another of my favorite parts of writing is including food and families taking meals together. Cooking together and feasting around the table with loved ones is such an important part of any culture. I use the local, ethnic, or cultural foods to bring the senses into a scene—smell, sight, texture, etc.
We find our ladies partaking of steaming bowls of bouillabaisse; grilled mahi-mahi kabobs marinated in ginger and lime; babakau (a bit like a pancake or an American donut with a jam filling or cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on top; poke, and the South Pacific’s version of pizza.
