I recently recorded an interview with my daughter, Melanie, who is a metastatic breast cancer “thriver” and the inspiration for why I write about courage, faith, and grit. The interview was presented at a women’s retreat where I was speaking on the theme of “A Call to Courage.”
Melanie’s testimony of her eleven-year (so far) breast cancer journey and how it has increased her faith can encourage others through their trials.
“Instead of focusing on the pain that we’re going through, focusing on the beauty that God has put in the difficult times helps us be courageous.” – Melanie Bernhart, metastatic breast cancer “thriver.”
We also have to focus on our faith. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines faith as: belief and trust in and loyalty to God or a firm belief in something for which there is no proof. Bible dictionaries get into the minute details, but in the end boils down to the same definition but adds the idea “understanding to the truth of what God has revealed.”
The truth is God commands us to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and we are saved by grace through faith as a gift of God. It doesn’t come from ourselves.
With that faith, a believer can come before God at any time in Christ-confidence whatever our circumstances, even through cancer. Through the Holy Spirit, Christ lives in our hearts through faith, and He will strengthen us with power in our inner being.
So, whatever he calls us to do or go through, He gives us the power, that is, courage.
What trials have you been going through? Have you been able to find courage? We’d love to hear how you found courage.
My new release, Faces of Courage, shows one woman’s struggles through domestic abuse and cancer while trying to find her courage—like Melanie and millions of others going through difficulties.
